Ahead of the global showpiece, world football’s governing body opened a transfer window for clubs participating in the competition to strengthen their squads.

Perhaps no side heading to the United States of America has taken greater advantage of it than Manchester City, as they have made as many as three high-profile signings in a bid to win their second Club World Cup.

According to Transfermarkt, the English giants have spent as much as €128.3 million (R2.6 billion) in recent weeks on Algerian defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, French playmaker Rayan Cherki, and midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. This makes them the highest spenders during this period.

The Citizens endured a disappointing 2024/25 season, having lost their Premier League title, been eliminated in the play-off round of the UEFA Champions League, and lost the FA Cup final.

They will now undoubtedly be looking for redemption at the Club World Cup and have gone to great lengths to strengthen their squad for the competition. They are, however, not the only European heavyweights to have spent heavily on signings ahead of the tournament, as Real Madrid have also been active.

Like City, Los Blancos have fallen short of their lofty expectations during the 2024/25 campaign, winning only the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. However, they will be aiming to extend their record of most Club World Cup victories by winning the newly expanded edition.

They will be looking to achieve this with the help of Dean Huijsen, whom they signed from Bournemouth for €59.50 million (R1.2 billion), making him the most expensive signing of this window.
