Ex-Chiefs Boss’ Club Declared Financially ‘Insolvent

Boavista Manager Stuart Baxter

Former Kaizer Chiefs boss Stuart Baxter's time at Boavista is more uncertain than ever as the club faces intense financial troubles.

The 71-year-old was brought in toward the end of last season in a desperate bid to turn the club's fortunes around, but the Anglo-Scotsman was unable to save the club from relegation out of the Portuguese top division.

This has left the club, and Baxter as a result, in a precarious position as it faces legal troubles.

In a club statement, Boavista revealed it had appealed to the courts to request it be saved from financial insolvency.

"Boavista FC resorted to a legal mechanism to reorganise its financial situation," the club said. "This decision was taken with a sense of duty, to defend Boavista FC and uphold the honour of its history and its members."

The Black and Whites have reportedly spent significant time preparing a recovery plan to help save the club, and that plan has now been put into action.

"The Club's sporting and financial context is publicly known. We intend to maintain serious and constructive dialogue with creditors, creating the conditions to find solutions and attract new partners and investors to the Boavista FC project," the club revealed.

In a league that has been dominated by the 'Big Three' of FC Porto, Sporting CP and SL Benfica, Boavista are history-makers as they are one of five teams to have won the league since its inception in 1934, doing so in the 2000/01 season, according to Transfermarkt.

Boavista management said the new decision marks a turning point in their history as they look to ensure sustainability for the future.

"The success of this recovery will undoubtedly be a milestone in the recent history of Boavista Futebol Clube and will strengthen the foundations of a stronger and more sustainable sporting and institutional project. We count on the support of all Boavisteiros to achieve our goal: To save Boavista Futebol Clube.
