A 21-year-old Sancho moved to Old Trafford from German giants Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for an eye-watering €85 million (R1,7 billion), according to Transfermarkt.
However, Sancho struggled to settle in Manchester and was a shadow of the star seen at Dortmund. He managed just 12 goals and six assists in 83 games for the Red Devils and spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Dortmund and the 2024/25 season on loan at Chelsea.
According to Yahoo Sports, McCarthy, who joined Man United as a coach under Erik Ten Hag, suggested why Sancho failed to make an impact with the club.
"I couldn’t fault Jadon in training," Yahoo Sports reported the Harambee Stars coach said. "He brings unbelievable quality, ability and skills. He can make you stop in awe and ask yourself just how he can do things. He brought unmatched quality."
He added, "I think what didn’t help Jadon was that he’s a very closed-off person. He kept to himself, and from the outside it looked like he wasn’t trying to make friends with his teammates. He might not have joked around, but really, he was just quiet, and I don’t think you should judge players on who he gets on with or not."
McCarthy revealed that Sancho's quiet and private nature may have counted against him, and the former Blackburn Rovers striker added that there may have been extra pressure from Ten Hag.

" I think that when it came to Erik, he wanted to see Jadon at his best every day," McCarthy said. Monday to Friday, no days off. I think that’s what the manager would expect from his players, and so it’s up to the players to give it to him. If you can’t do that, you’re going to have problems, and I think the differences and problems that surfaced," he added.
