Lambert was sacked earlier in the week, following a string of poor results and Villa have wasted no time to announce the former Tottenham Hotspur boss as their new head coach.
The 46-year-old has agreed to join Villa until 2018 and the former Spurs boss can't wait to get started.
"It is a great honour to manage one of the biggest clubs in English football," Sherwood told the club's official website.
"I can't wait to get started and I'm really looking forward to the challenge."
Aston Villa take on Leicester City in a fifth round FA Cup tie at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.
