On Monday, Messi beat off competition from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo to claim an unprecedented sixth Golden Ball.
Soon after the ceremony, though, Van Dijk's club teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who ended 19th in the voting polls for the award, took to Twitter to post an image of himself and two of his club teammates, along with a tongue-in-cheek comment.
The post, and the timing thereof, seemed to mock Messi about Alexander-Arnold's quickly taken corner in the now-famous second leg of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League semi-final, which was instrumental in Barcelona's exit from the competition.

The corner, which set up Divock Origi for Liverpool's fourth goal of the night, completed a remarkable 4-3 come-from-behind aggregate win for the Reds, who ultimately went on to the lift the trophy.
