Ballon d'Or Chief Makes Big Lewandowski Announcement

Ballon d'Or Chief Makes Big Lewandowski Announcement

A Ballon d'Or chief has confirmed big news relating to Barcelona superstar Robert Lewandowski, whom many believed should have won the award in 2020.

Rumours in recent days have suggested the Poland international was finally in contention to be handed the 2020 Ballon d'Or, four years after France Football decided to cancel the ceremony in Paris during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organisation's call at the time was met with great confusion among football fans after Europe's biggest leagues and competitions were played to completion despite the virus disrupting the calendar.

That year, Lewandowski led his former side Bayern Munich to a treble and finished the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League campaign with an impressive 15 goals in 10 matches.

His efforts were so widely recognised by his colleagues and peers that even Lionel Messi, during his Ballon d'Or acceptance speech in 2021, suggested it was unfair Lewandowski was not handed the award 12 months earlier.

Despite calls from the public for the organisers of the prestigious accolade to retrospectively award the forward the 2020 Ballon d'Or, France Football director Nicolas Manissier has put the idea to bed.

"We are not considering awarding the Ballon d'Or to Robert Lewandowski for 2020," he said, according to Football Espana.

"As an institution, we have our own regulations that we rigorously respect."

Lewandowski came second to Messi in 2021, the highest he has ever finished in the ranking.
