In what was considered a surprising move by the South African, Mokwena decided against selecting Algerian goalkeeper Taoufik Moussaoui for the team's pre-season tour of Tunisia, according to Foot Algerie.
The publication reported that Mokwena held one-on-one meetings with every member of the team to assess his squad for the upcoming season, but was surprised by the way Moussaoui carried himself during the meeting, allegedly distracted by his phone throughout the meeting.
Foot Algerie claim that Mokwena considered that to be a sign of 'inappropiate' toward the coaching staff and made the call to remove the 34-year-old from his squad.
MC Alger's management held an emergency meeting in an attempt to ease tensions between Mokwena and the player, and despite Mokwena being told that Moussaoui remained under contract with the club, the head coach stood firm on his stance.

The former Wydad AC boss declared that the goalkeeper would not feature in his plans for next season, even if he returned to training with the side. The Algerian chose not to travel with the rest of the team and has now reportedly started looking for a new club.
