After leaving Wydad Athletic Club at the end of last season, there was widespread speculation about where the Johannesburg native would end up ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, with Orlando Pirates strongly rumoured as a likely destination. Ultimately, the Buccaneers opted to appoint Moroccan coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Instead of returning home to coach in the Betway Premiership, Mokwena decided to continue his adventure in North Africa. This time, he took charge of reigning Algerian champions MC Algers. Having spent the off-season preparing his squad for the new campaign, he oversaw his first match in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 this past weekend.
His debut came in the fierce derby against arch-rivals USM Algers. Unfortunately for the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach, he was unable to secure a victory as the clash ended in a goalless draw. After the match, the 38-year-old took full responsibility for the result.
“It’s difficult to give my first impression after just one match, the first of my championship. It’s very complicated, and our preparation has also been difficult (because of injuries),” the South African tactician said, as per Transfermarkt.

“But today, the only person I’m not satisfied with is myself. I think I should have helped them more, I didn’t do it enough. The important thing is to have the mentality to progress after every match.”
