Competition Heats Up: Mashego Could Be Allowed To Leave Chloorkop

Terrence Mashego’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns has once again come under the spotlight, with indications that the club could be open to allowing the South African left-back to move on.

The 29-year-old was one of South Africa’s standout performers at the recent CHAN tournament, reminding many of his quality and resilience despite a stop-start period at Chloorkop.

However, back at his club, the situation appears less encouraging. Following Sundowns’ capture of Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC, Mashego now finds himself facing even stiffer competition in the left-back role, with Aubrey Modiba and Divine Lunga already ahead of him in the pecking order.

Sources close to the situation suggest that the former Cape Town City man is considering Kaizer Chiefs reportedly sounded out Sundowns over Mashego’s availability during the January transfer window, but reports suggested that their approach was rejected at the time. With the arrival of Basadien, though, there is growing belief in the fraternity that the Brazilians may soften their stance should fresh offers arrive.

“Terrence is a top player, but it’s tough for him at Sundowns right now. With so many left-backs, it’s natural he’ll look at what’s best for his career. Yes, they (Chiefs) had interest before, and other clubs are watching closely,” a Siya source revealed.

A few clubs in the Betway Premiership are understood to be monitoring developments closely. Stellenbosch, TS Galaxy and Chippa United have all been mentioned as potential destinations should Mashego be made available, whether on loan or permanently.

The left-back arrived at Chloorkop in 2022 with high expectations after establishing himself as one of the most consistent performers in the league at Cape Town City.

Yet, injuries and fierce competition for places have limited his progress in a squad brimming with depth and international quality at Sundowns.
