The South African tactician has only just taken charge of the reigning Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 champions, but he has already been tasked with making significant calls on the club’s playing personnel.
Upon his arrival, the former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach will need to decide whether or not to retain 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winner Andy Delort.
At the start of last season, the veteran striker—who has been one of the most renowned forwards in Ligue 1 over the past decade—made a much-anticipated move to Algeria for the first time in his career, signing for MCA to great fanfare.
Although he scored on his domestic debut against Paradou AC, Delort struggled to settle in the Algerian capital. Midway through the season, he returned to Ligue 1 and rejoined Montpellier SC, where he previously made the most appearances and scored the most goals in his career. However, he was unable to rediscover his former form, failing to score in any of his 11 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign.
Now back in Algiers, El Massa reports that the French-born attacker will rejoin the squad for the start of their pre-season camp in Tunisia. It is there that Mokwena will conduct a thorough assessment of his squad ahead of the new season.

Delort is expected to be one of the key players Mokwena will need to make a final decision on. According to the same report, the 38-year-old coach has been granted full authority to determine the striker’s future at the club.
