At the start of this season, Aaron Wan-Bissaka decided to call time on his career at Old Trafford, completing a move worth €17 million (R347 million) to West Ham United.
The move marked a return to the defender’s hometown, having been born in London. However, the 27-year-old has now tapped further back into his roots and decided to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo. The right-back has been called up for the first time by Sébastien Desabre for their upcoming friendlies in June against Mali and Madagascar.
This is not the first time the London native will be representing the Leopards, as he has already made an appearance for the nation’s youth sides at under-17 level, according to Transfermarkt.
He would go on to play for England’s under-20 and under-21 sides, and since then, there were rumblings that he would eventually represent the Three Lions at senior level. However, with fierce competition in his position—featuring the likes of Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James, all mainstays in Gareth Southgate’s plans at the time—it became difficult for Wan-Bissaka to break through into the national team.

It was rumoured that the Central African giants had previously made attempts to persuade Wan-Bissaka to make the switch, but to no avail—until now. He is poised to make his senior international debut once the 2024/25 club season comes to an end.
