The Egyptian giants had targeted ex-Dortmund manager Marco Rose as the successor to Marcel Koller but talks had reportedly broken down over salary compensation.
Egyptian publication Tawasul reported that Mahmoud El Khatib, the club's board of directors chairman, has nominations from several managers but the club has set one condition for the new manager.
According to Tawasul outlet, an Al Ahly source revealed that only German, Portuguese, and Swiss coaches were reportedly considered for the role and the club is currently negotiating with five managers from these nationalities.
Among the candidates to be shortlisted include Portuguese coaches Helio Sousa and Jose Gomes, while Croatian-German coach Kosta Runjacic was also considered.
Youm7 reported that Al Ahly officials had reportedly entered into talks with Sousa, who previously led the Bahrain national team.
Meanwhile, Sport El-Watan reported that Gomes, currently in charge of Saudi side Al Fateh, was also considered to take over at the Red Giant before the FIFA Club World Cup with the club reportedly in talks with the manager's agent.
"There has never been any communication between Gomez and Al Ahly officials, but Nuno Gomes, the famous Portuguese agent, and friend of Jose Gomes, is in constant contact with Al Ahly officials and wants to complete the deal to bring the coach to the club," journalist Amir Hisham said.
