Confirmed: Two More Bosses Exit After AFCON Embarrassment

Two more managers have been dismissed by their respective national teams after their poor performances at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Two more managers have been fired from their positions as head coach following their poor performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

On Wednesday, both Jean-Louis Gasset (Ivory Coast) and Djamel Belmadi (Algeria) were removed from their national team head coaching positions after their sides' bad showings at the continental showpiece.

In the case of Belmadi, the former midfielder was ousted from his position after his men failed to win any of their group-stage encounters at this edition of the tournament.

The last match the now ex-Algeria boss won at an AFCON was the 2019 final. Since that famous night in Cairo, the Desert Foxes have qualified for two successive tournaments, and in both editions finished bottom of their respective groups.

Ivory Coast's immediate future, however, does not seem as bleak, having just scraped through as one of the best third-place sides during this year's group stage. However, the Elephants finished their group campaign in dismal fashion, losing 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea.

This result was enough to prompt the Ivorian Football Federation to part ways with the 70-year-old and his assistant Ghislain Printant, citing insufficient results as the cause for his dismissal.

With the defeat to the Group A winners being the biggest home loss in the nation's history, they will now have to face more stiff competition in the reigning champions Senegal next Monday.

Former Ivory Coast midfielder Emerse Fae will assume the responsibility of caretaker manager of the Elephants for the rest of the tournament.
