Kaizer Chiefs' technical team is believed to be set to give management the green light to renew midfielder George Matlou's contract after giving him a chance to prove himself after injury.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, Amakhosi had given Matlou a lifeline to save his career at Chiefs and then after good performances, the club is now believed to have seen enough to decide to keep him beyond his current contract which ends in June this year.

Insiders close to the club stated that Amakhosi are set to offer the former Moroka Swallows midfielder a new one-year deal with a one-year option which could see him stay at the club until June 2027.

"For now, we can say the new deal is as good as done. The club wanted to see him, if he can play after the injury and after the technical team saw what he can do both at training and in the games he has played, they have agreed that they can offer him a new one-year contract with another one-year option. So, although it is not a done deal yet there is light at the end of the tunnel for George (Matlou)," the Siya source stated.

A second insider stated that Matlou's progress at Chiefs was disturbed by an injury last season which almost cost him his future with the club.

"To be honest with you, his injury almost cost him his future at Chiefs. Last season he was expected to play an important role but after just a few games he got injured. It was a long-term injury and when the new coach came in he was still recovering and was not part of his plans going into the new season. But after fully recovering, the technical team gave him a chance and now he is on the verge of a new deal. The injury is what delayed his progress but hopefully now things are looking good for him," the second insider observed.

So far this season Matlou has played a few games and he is on course to overtake his contribution from his last campaign.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for comment but there was no response at the time of publishing.
