Areas of concern within the Mamelodi Sundowns squad are almost unheard of in the modern era because of the sheer amount of players signed over the last couple of seasons. We look a side ready to compete in each and every competition, with strength in depth being one of our best assets.
Now though, we may have a slight problem on our hands in that regard. With Punch Masenamela now gone, we are left with Tebogo Langerman as the only natural left-back in the team.
Could this be an area of concern going forward?
I feel it will be, if we don’t address it at the end of the season. For now, we are basically forced to field Langerman and possibly Mzikayise Mashaba as a utility player in that position.
At the moment we are fine defensively, but being fine cannot be accepted by a big club competing at all levels. We need to make sure that in terms of quality, our squad is balanced and that every replacement player is of Downs’ standard.
We have been linked with names like Thabo Matlaba and Patrick Phungwayo throughout the course of the season, as we look to bolster the defence out wide. A section of the fans feel that letting Masenamela go was a mistake and I feel that to some extent it was… but what we do know is that we have to strengthen our left-back department.
Do you feel that this is an area of concern for Downs?
