Chiefs & Downs Have To Fork Out Millions For Cape Town Stars

Chiefs & Downs Have To Fork Out Millions For Cape Town Stars

Cape Town Spurs players celebrate a goal scored by Michael Morton of Cape Town Spurs during the DStv Premiership 2023/24 football match between Cape Town Spurs and Kaizer Chiefs at Cape Town Stadium on 25 May 2024

With Rushwin Dortley having already made his way to Kaizer Chiefs for a sizeable fee, Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has explained why the rest of the clubs' in-demand players will not come cheap.

As reported by the Siya crew, Dortley, who was officially announced on Sunday, had joined Chiefs on a three-year deal for a transfer fee upwards of R6 million.

His former teammates, Asenele Velebayi, Ashley Cupido and Chumani Butsaka amongst others continue to garner interest from within the Betway Premiership and beyond.

But these players, if they do leave, won't come cheap and the Spurs boss has explained why.

"We are unapologetic in saying that we will not allow our players to leave for nothing. So much resources go into developing a player and we do all of that out of our pockets without any assistance from SAFA or anyone else," he told the Siya crew.

"We won't stand in anyone's way either. If the deal is palatable for all parties involved, like it did with Rushwin, then we will consider it. But we are not desperate and besides, most of these players are contracted to our club, so we see no reason why we should sell just for the sake of it," he continued.

Spurs will be hoping to mount a strong charge towards a return to the top flight having been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
