Williams To Face Mbappe? FIFA Imposes Strict Rule For CWC

The rules of the FIFA Club World Cup have officially been announced.

The likes of Ronwen Williams could be coming up against Kylian Mbappe, Cole Palmer and Lionel Messi in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup following new rules imposed on the tournament.

As the months go by, the revamped version of the tournament draws closer, and as a consequence, so do more details of the spectacle.

World football's governing body, FIFA, has now outlined the rules for the competition, and one of them insists that clubs field their strongest teams.

This is outlined in Article 4, section 4.2, subsection b, which states that every club that signs the participation agreement automatically undertakes to field its strongest team throughout the competition, according to ESPN

The rule is just one of many regarding a competition that has attracted a lot of controversy. FIFA president Gianni Infantino decided to change the Club World Cup from an annual spectacle to one that takes place every four years, with an expanded 32-team format.

Mamelodi Sundowns will be one of the four African representatives, joined by Al Ahly, Wydad Athletic Club and Esperance de Tunis from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

With each team required to play their best sides, the Yassine Trophy nominee will likely have to go from facing shots by the likes of Tshegofatso Mabasa and Ranga Chivaviro to thwarting superstar strikers such as Harry Kane, Nicolas Jackson, Lautaro Martinez, and Erling Haaland.

While the rules for the global football showcase have been established, FIFA has yet to announce a venue for the final or secure broadcast rights. Apple TV is reported to have made a $1 billion (R17.7 billion) bid for the rights, but it is understood that the Swiss-based organisation is seeking significantly more.
