On Sunday evening, the Super Eagles were set to land in the city of Benghazi, Libya, ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Mediterranean Knights.
It is alleged that while descending into the nation's second most populous city, the pilot of the three-time African champions' charted plane was instructed to not land and instead divert the flight to the town of Al Abraq.
Al Abraq is understood to be a two-hour drive to where the Nigeria camp were supposed to be, but even after landing, it is said that the Nigeria Football Federation was not allowed to co-ordinate transport arrangements to get the team to the hotel.
The west African nation would subsequently be stuck at Al Abraq International Airport for more than 20 hours without access to food or water as members of the Nigerian squad provided updates on their situation via their various social media platforms.
Captain William Troost-Ekong took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to state that after the ordeal, the team had no intention of playing the AFCON qualifier.
The side has since returned to their native Nigeria, but CAF has reacted to what transpired and will investigate the matter further before delivering a verdict.
"The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team ("Super Eagles") and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities," an official statement from African football's governing body read.
