SA Goalkeeper Delighted To Make Overseas Debut

South African goalkeeper Jethren Barr explained the feeling of finally making his debut for his new club in Europe and gave reason for signing a short-term deal.

Barr has signed a one-year deal with Ireland Premier Division club Drogheda United and made his debut in the Leinster Senior Cup on Tuesday evening as they hammered lower division outfit Athlone Town 4-0 to progress to the semi-final. Barr has been without a club since leaving Northern Ireland club Portadown FC last year.

"With regards to my new club, obviously I am happy to get on the pitch for them. I was injured throughout pre-season. It's the first time the coaching staff could really see me play in a proper game, so I am glad I went on and made a couple of really good saves to keep the team in the game and hold onto that clean sheet," he said to the Siya crew.

"It's always a fight when you have to prove yourself in a new country and in a new league. You always have to come in and keep a clean sheet straight away and show that you mean business from the get go.

Having been away from South Africa for about three years now, Barr does admit that home sickness starts to creep in, which is why he was careful not to sign a long-term deal.

"I only signed a year contract with them. It runs until December. When you are playing this side, sometimes you need to be careful. You can't sign longer contracts. You always have that thing in the back of your mind that it's now the third season I am playing away from home. You start to get home sick and all these kinds of things, so you have to be careful with the length of contract. I am pushing and doing well, but at the same time it's getting tougher to constantly be away from home. Hopefully it goes well for me this season and we will see what happens."
