Not many trophies have eluded the Brazilians like the CAF Champions League, a title they last lifted in 2016.
The Tshwane giants have come close in recent years, reaching the semi-final as recently as last year; however, the biggest club trophy on the continent momentarily continues to evade the Chloorkop-based side.
The good news for Sundowns – and their ardent supporters – is the fact that they have once again advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition with one game to spare after their 2-0 win over Mauritania's Nouadhibou on Saturday.
Coach Rulani Mokwena's men do have one more group game to play – but Bongani Zungu has backed his side to go all the way in this year's competition.
"The coach always tells us that nobody has a position at Sundowns, so my role, you know, I'm a centre-back, you know? But my job is also to overload in the midfield," he told Sundowns' media department of his adjusted centre-back position.
"We've got the players to go all the way. I think last year's competition made us learn a lot. So now we've got that experience and it's the guys that were at AFCON,
"You can see the pass from Tebza [Teboho Mokoena], Ronza [Ronwen Williams] controlling the game, you know Shika [Themba Zwane]. They were unbelievable. So we've got the, I think, the capacity to try and challenge for this year's competition," he added.
Sundowns take on TP Mazembe at Loftus Versveld Stadium on 3 March in their final group match.
