EPL Legend: Williams' Penalty Shootout Saves Best I've Ever Seen

A Premier League legend has hailed Ronwen Williams' heroics for Bafana Bafana against Cape Verde as the best performance he has ever seen in a penalty shootout.

The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper put on a masterclass in penalty-saving on Saturday as South Africa advanced past Cape Verde in their quarter-final to book a place in the semi-finals against Nigeria.

Williams saved four penalties to inspire Bafana to the next round, becoming the first goalkeeper in Africa Cup of Nations history to do so and the first South African to keep four clean sheets in a single tournament since Andre Arendse did so in 1996.

His performances in the Ivory Coast have earned the 32-year-old global attention, with ex-Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright saying on his podcast, called Wrighty's House, that Williams' efforts in the shootout were the best he has ever seen.

"Did they do some work on their (Cape Verde's) penalty-takers or something? Because that was as good a goalkeeper performance in any penalty shootout I've ever seen, ever," he said, speaking to South African journalist Velile Mnyandu.
