Salah's Agent Issues Statement After Decision To Leave AFCON

Salah's Agent Issues Statement After Decision To Leave AFCON

Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah's agent has issued a statement after it was confirmed that the Liverpool winger will be returning to England during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 31-year-old suffered a hamstring injury during Egypt's second match of the tournament, a 2-2 draw Ghana in Group B.

His fitness troubles ruled him out of the Pharaohs' final encounter of the first round on Monday, as he could only watch from the sidelines as his teammates drew 2-2 with group winners Cape Verde.

Ahead of this week's match, Salah was heavily criticised by sections of the media after the Egyptian FA announced he would be heading back to Liverpool for his recovery.

Egypt legend Ahmed Hassan questioned the former Chelsea star's commitment, suggesting it might have made more sense for one of the Reds' medical staff members to accompany him in Ivory Coast.

His agent, Ramy Abbas, has since explained that his client's knock is worse than initially feared and insisted that his best chance of continuing at this year's AFCON, should Egypt progress to the competition's latter stages, is by getting treatment at his club.

"The injury is more serious than first thought," he said, according to Fabrizio Romano.

"He will be out for 21-28 days. His best chance at participating in the current AFCON is by undergoing intensive rehabilitation in the UK and rejoining the team as soon as he is fit."

Salah has never got his hands on the AFCON trophy, but he did earn runners-up medals in 2017 and 2021.
