English-Born Man Utd Star 'Considering' AFCON Call-Up

English-Born Man Utd Star 'Considering' AFCON Call-Up

An English-born Manchester United star is reportedly considering accepting a call-up ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

The Democratic Republic of Congo boast one of the more formidable attacking lines in African football, with the likes of Cedric Bakambu, Simon Banza and Fiston Mayele all at the disposal of Sebastien Desabre ahead of the continental showpiece in west Africa early next year.

However, it seems the French tactician is keen on shoring up his defence, with The Athletic revealing that the Leopards have approached London-born Aaron Wan-Bissaka to represent the team as soon as the looming AFCON.

The right-back has represented England at U20 and U21 level, and while he has been called up by Gareth Southgate before, the 25-year-old has never made a senior appearance for the Three Lions.

This makes Wan-Bissaka eligible to switch his allegiance, and the same report claims that he is seriously accepting the call-up as he looks to kick-start his senior international career.

While this may bode well for the fullback, it would leave the Red Devils in a compromising position as he could be gone for a month during one of the busiest periods of the season.

United are already expected to be without the services of first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana due to the competition in Africa, while Amad Diallo, Hannibal Mejbri and on-loan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat are also expected to depart for the latest iteration of AFCON.

Wan-Bissaka has struggled with injuries so far in 2023/24, but will be looking to re-establish himself within Erik ten Hag's starting XI from this weekend, when the record Premier League champions take on Everton.
