The Norwegian was relieved of his duties at the Red Devils in November 2021 following a run of four defeats in five matches.

Prior to his departure, Solskjaer caused a stir when he dropped Ronaldo to the bench for a Premier League encounter against Everton at Old Trafford, although he was introduced early in the second half.

After the match, legendary manager Ferguson was caught on film suggesting to famous ex-UFC fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov that he did not agree with Solskjaer's decision to overlook Ronaldo from the start, in a video that went viral following the 1-1 draw.

"That's the one time Sir Alex has ever apologised to me," Solskjaer said, according to The Athletic.

"He was caught on a video saying, 'You should always play your best players' after Ronaldo started on the bench for one game.

"He (Ferguson) rang me and apologised because he knows how difficult it is. I'm clever enough to stay away.

"It's difficult enough to be the manager of Manchester United without the ex-managers trying to give you advice."

Solskjaer's final game in charge of United was a 4-1 away defeat to Watford, while Ronaldo ended the campaign with 24 goals across all competitions.
