'Nobody Knows Who He Is’ – Arsenal Star's World Cup Brazil Call-Up Slammed

'Nobody Knows Who He Is’ – Arsenal Star's World Cup Brazil Call-Up Slammed

A former Brazil international has criticised the inclusion of an Arsenal star in the Selecao's 2022 FIFA World Cup squad, claiming that nobody knows who he is.

18-Year-Old Rejects World Cup Call-Up

Earlier this week, Brazil head coach Tite announced his 26-man side that will be competing at the World Cup later this month. In it, the 61-year-old included Arsenal duo Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli, with both playing pivotal roles in helping the Gunners to the top of the Premier League this campaign.

Martinelli has been particularly impressive this season, as the winger has managed to bag five goals and two assists so far in the English top-flight. However, his compatriot Neto has bemoaned the attacker's inclusion.

"This is a shame, a joke!" the 16-time capped Brazilian said while speaking to Os Donos da Bola.

"I feel ashamed! Not because of Dani Alves' story. What is Martinelli's story? 33 career goals. This is a shame, a lack of respect for football.

"Doing this with football shows that you don't deserve the position you are in.

"Calling up Martinelli and not calling up Gabigol is a lack of respect. The biggest shame of all the call-ups. Calling up Martinelli shows that you, Tite, shouldn't hold the position you do, because you're not fair to Gabigol.

"The guy [Martinelli] who scores five goals in the season, who walks around the mall here, nobody knows who he is… And not taking Gabigol, the guy who scored the goal of the Libertadores title, who scored 29 goals in the season.

"What has Martinelli done in European football? Arsenal are not even in the Champions League. This is a calamity!"

Atletico Star 'Interested' In Move To PSG In January

Martinelli will go to Qatar as the youngest member of the five-time world champions and aim to help the football superpower recapture the World Cup for the first time in two decades. It is in the Gulf where he will be hoping to announce himself to the world after an impressive start in the league.
