Result: Stellenbosch 1-3 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 09 October 2022

Venue: DHL Stadium

Chiefs made only one change from their win over Swallows, as Siyabonga Ngezana replaced the suspended Zitha Kwinika, with Kgaogelo Sekgota, Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana and Ashley Du Preez leading the attack.

Amakhosi had a bright start as Du Preez had a big chance within the first minute after a through ball over the top by goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune but he was denied by shot-stopper Sage Stephens.

The visitors continued to create chances as a bad clearance sent Sekgota clear on goal eight minutes later at the back post but Stephens made a point-blank save in another one-on-one situation.

Stellies also attacked with a good intensity, as Nhlanhla Mgaga eventually broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark with a low drive past Khune after Njabulo Blom gave away possession while playing out from the back.

Chiefs were dealt an injury blow ten minutes before the halftime break after Khune required medical attention with a suspected groin problem and after a brief moment he was replaced by Brandon Petersen.

Amakhosi regained their momentum towards the end of the first stanza and Bimenyimana eventually restored parity for the visitors in first-half stoppage time after converting a penalty after was brought down in the box by Mogamad De Goede.

The Soweto giants had the perfect start in the second stanza as they were awarded another penalty within three minutes after a handball by Fawaaz Basadien in the box, which allowed Bimenyimana to step up an complete his brace.

There was more to come, as Amakhosi got the third penalty just before the hour-mark after De Goede brought down Bimenyimana in the box and was sent off for the tackle. Bimenyimana made it 3-1 for Chiefs with another composed strike from 12-yards to complete his hat-trick.

Steve Barker's troops had a fight in them as they got behind the Amakhosi defence a couple of times and the visitors looked to regain control of the game with a double change 13 minutes before time as Samkelo Zwane replaced Yusuf Maart and Dillon Solomons came on for Keagan Dolly.
