Mamelodi Sundowns owner, Patrice Motsepe, has honoured the contribution made to South African football by Kaizer Motaung Snr as well as Irvin Khoza.
This news coincides with Motsepe agreeing to bankroll a R40 million deal to sponsor the Safa Second Division for the next five years. The 52-year-old, who is the chairman of his own self-titled foundation, made the announcement at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg last night.
The league will now be named after the Soweto-born oligarch's late father, ABC Motsepe. In particular, Motsepe singled out Motaung for his contribution and even went as far as naming two player awards for the league after him.
The two awards are the Kaizer Motaung Player of the Year worth R150 000, and the Kaizer Motaung Players' Player of the Year gong worth R100 000.
However, he also honoured Khoza by putting his name to a seperate award as well - the Dr Irvin Khoza Role-Model Chairman of the Year Award. In this category the winner will recieve R100 000.
Motsepe emphasised just how much contribution both men had made to SA football as a whole. In a comment on Chiefs' official website, he said, "I have known Kaizer Motaung and Dr Irvin Khoza since I was a little boy. Kaizer has made a unique and unequaled contribution to the development of soccer in South Africa. I call him the father of SA football because he has made a huge contribution in soccer."
