Is Ronwen Williams the best goalkeeper in SA?

Is Ronwen Williams the best goalkeeper in SA?

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates shot-stopper Brilliant Khuzwayo has weighed in on the current state of goalkeeping in the country.

The goalkeeping position has always been competitive, with Andre Arendse, Brian Baloyi, William Okpara, David Tlale, Moeneeb Josephs, Senzo Meyiwa, Rowan Fernandez paving the way for the younger generation. Kiazer Chiefs shot-stopper, Itumeleng Khune held the number one position for more than a decade for both club and country.

With Ronwen Williams currently the first choice goalkeeper for Bafana Bafana, with Khune falling down the pecking order, Khuzwayo is concerned that there is no plan after the Matsatsantsa captain.

"In South Africa we struggling with goalkeepers. With due respect, do you think Ronwen Williams is the best one you can opt for in the country? Please don't get me wrong, he is quality but also, who is challenging him?" Khuzwayo said, speaking to the Siya crew during in Durban on Saturday.

"Who is next after him? Ricardo Goss is at Sundowns and number four, which I think if he can join another club, he can challenge for Bafana Bafana spot."

Khuzwayo further says there is a lack of proper development and well-qualified goalkeeper coaches in the country.

"It should tells us that we lack goalkeeping development in the country. Do we have proper academies? Do we have South African qualified goalkeeper coaches? Only a few teams in the PSL have have FIFA qualifications, at Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and others don't have.

"In South Africa, we are still behind and we cannot be still relying on some people, I won't mention their names."
