With speculation surrounding Thulani Serero's future, former Ajax Amsterdam defender, Gabriel 'Ninja' Mofokeng, has warned the midfielder that a return to South Africa would not be a wise decision.
Bafana International To See Out Munich Stay
In this week's Siya special in Soccer Laduma issue number 1009, the Siya crew analysed Serero's options for the future, with a stay at his current club, Ajax Amsterdam, looking unlikely. If Serero wants to stay in Europe, he would likely need to take a pay cut, but he could earn similar money to what he makes on his current contract if he decides to return to Mzansi, with the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs capable of meeting his wage demands.
However, having experienced a situation similar to Serero's during his own playing career, the 35-year-old would like to see the Bafana Bafana international remain in Europe.
"If he has the option, I'd love to see him play overseas, even if he has to take a pay cut or something, then maybe he can get a better deal while he's playing there," he told Soccer Laduma.
The former Ajax defender, drawing from his own experience, added that it would be better to stay in Europe and try to attract bigger teams rather than returning to South Africa.
"But if he comes back here and hopes to go back (to Europe), I don't think it's a good idea," he continued. "I tried the same thing before I came back, I went to Belgium and I also went to Norway and there were some difficulties signing the contract I think it's good for him to be overseas, because there's everything for him, even if he has to take a pay cut.
"Then he has a chance to play for a big team. And then he can come back here if things don't go well. Maybe he could then go to Chiefs or something like that."
Parker: The Title Is In Chiefs' Reach
Like Serero, Ninja Mofokeng came through the youth system at Ajax Cape Town before joining their Dutch counterparts. After four years in Amsterdam, he then returned to NFD side, FC AK.
