DStv Premiership Report: Swallows v Stellenbosch 10 September

Stellenbosch ended their three-game winless run in the DStv Premiership with a 2-1 triumph over Swallows FC on Saturday afternoon.

Result: Swallows 1-2 Stellenbosch

Date: 10 September 2022

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Swallows rotated their side as Givemore Khupe, Tshediso Patjie, Siboniso Mtshali and Thato Makua were given a run while Stellies recalled Antonio Van Wyk and handed Ibraheem Jabaar first start of the season.

The Birds had a bright start and combined well going forward but they were not decisive in the last third, as the likes of Waseem Isaacs and Sibusiso Mtshali could not get the final passes.

It was the visitors who broke the deadlock as Sinethemba Mngomezulu opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark from a moment of individual brilliance, after he dribbled past a couple of challenges and curled a shot into the top corner.

Dylan Kerr's charges kept on fighting and were rewarded with the equaliser with eight minutes left of the first stanza after Vusi Sibiya misdirected a clearance into his own net from a set-piece.

Stellies, however, settled the quicker of the sides in the second stanza as they caught Swallows cold eight minutes in after Junior Mendieta restored their lead with a tap-in from a rebound after Sibongiseni Mthethwa's flick came off the post.

With the game settling down, Steve Barker refreshed his side with a double change on 68 minutes as Mendieta and Van Wyk were replaced by William Likuta and Devon Titus in midfield.

Stellies were the most threatening side in the closing stages as Nhlanhla Mgaga was denied a goal that would have put the game to bed with a free-kick that was smothered by goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa.

Nevertheless, Barker's charges were able to see out the closing stages of the contest to collect their second win of the campaign.

Here's how they lined up:

Swallows: Mbanjwa, Lukhubeni, Letlabika, Sait, Shwabule, Makua, Mkhupe, Wambi, Patjie, S.Mtshali, Isaacs

Subs: Thomson, Sasman, Mthethwa, Mngonyama, Matsheke, Mvelase, Allan, Amoojee, L.Mtshali
