Warriors have been crowned the first DStv Compact Cup champions after rallying from behind to defeat Coastal United 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
DStv Compact Cup Final
Result: Coastal United 1-2 Warriors
Date: 29 January 2022
Venue: FNB Stadium
Warriors made two changes from the win over Amabutho, as Ruzaigh Gamildien and Goodman Mosele replaced Kwame Peprah and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in the line-up while Coastal brought in Athenkosi Mcaba as a replacement for Robyn Johannes, who was sent off in a win over Dinaledi.
United had the perfect start after Ashley Du Preez gave them the lead within a minute with a curling strike past goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune after going through on goal from a counter-attack.
Warriors responded almost immediately thereafter, as Gamildien also went through on goal and sent a superb curling strike into the top corner.
As the game was opening up, Mpho Makola came close to restoring the lead for Coastal in the 24th minute with a curling free-kick from outside the box towards the top corner but his effort was parried away by Khune at full stretch.
Warriors were the most threatening side in the closing phase of the first stanza, with Keagan Dolly particular exploiting the space on the right wing but they lacked the final product.
Here are the latest PSL deals to have taken place in the last few weeks:
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, who was voted to come on by fans at halftime in place of Mosele, gave Warriors a spark going forward in the opening exchanges and forced a save out of goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke with a strike from range.
Steve Barker's charges got out of their defensive shell as Taariq Fielies had a chance to grab the winner 12 minutes before time with a towering header at the back post that sailed just over the bar.
However, Gamildien gave Warriors the lead seven minutes before time with a strike across Masuluke after a through ball by Thabo Matlaba to complete his brace.
Substitute Tshegofatso Mabasa had a big chance to bury the game for Dylan Kerr's men in stoppage time after going through on goal in the six-yard box but was denied by Masuluke.
Masuluke came close to snatching the equaliser for United just after that from a long ball in the box at the death but his header at the back post sailed slightly over the bar, as Warriors held on to clinch the cup.
Here's how they lined up:
Coastal United: Masuluke, Farmer, Fielies, Mcaba, Mdunyelwa, Sinkala, Makola, Nodada, Mashego, Makgopa, Du Preez
Warriors: Khune, Matlaba, Jele, Munyai, Ngcobo, Lorch, Blom, Mbhele, Dolly, Peprah, Gamildien.
