It takes, on average, around a 58-point tally in order to capture the PSL title in South Africa, with 30 points securing survival in the league.
Since the PSL began in the 1996/97 season the highest points total was achieved by Mamelodi Sundowns in 1998/99 and 1999/00 when they managed to collect 75 points, although that was when there were 18 teams in the league, not 16 as there are now.
The record for the 16-team PSL is 63 points, set by Kaizer Chiefs in the 2003/04 season, when they lost just three games throughout their whole campaign, although SuperSport United managed to win it in 2007/08 with just 54 points.
Meanwhile, the lowest points total that a PSL team has collected and succeeded in remaining in the league was in the same season when Dynamos managed to stay up despite their low 24-point haul.
With this in mind, Chiefs, who are currently on 40 points, will be aiming to pick up at least 18 points from their last 12 games (around 1.5 points per game), as they look to retain the PSL title that they won last year.
The Amakhosi's closest rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns on 31 points, need 27 points to reach 58 points and have 14 games left to play (around 1.9 points per game), while Pirates, who have a whopping 17 games left, need to pick up around 2 points per game if they're to reach 58 points.
Looking at the bottom of the table, the six teams still under 20 points, (Mpumalanga Black Aces, University of Pretoria, Maritzburg United, Polokwane City, Free State Stars and Golden Arrows) will be keen to try and close in on the 30 point mark in the near future.
