This past weekend, we saw some beautiful football coming out of the beautiful game. Bidvest Wits delivered a footballing lesson to Mamelodi Sundowns with a 3-0 thrashing in the MTN8 final. Towards the end of the game, Wits engaged in some flavoursome football, but what did the supporters make of this?
After the game, Downs boss Pitso Mosimane said he was not happy with the showboating, This was a slight shock, as usually this complaint would come from an overseas coach, so for it to come from a local coach… this stunned the footballing world slightly.
Some did see Wits' flamboyant display as a sign of disrespect, though.
"I echo your sentiments, my coach. We know that winning is a good feeling as we're testimony to it ourselves but we never showboat to any opponent as professionalism is a norm to any professional player and teams alike. With all that said, I'm not trying to shy away from our loss as I congratulate the beautiful Students as they outplayed us in every department. CCL is our only hope now. God bless Mamelodi Sundowns FC." – SundownsOn
Others saw no fault in Wits' ways and thought that this was a welcome addition to our football. It is reminiscent of an old-school South African way of playing. On top of this, Wits earned the right to show some kasi flavour at the end.
"Showboating is our SA football culture, the Mourinho-wannabe arrogant, ever-proud sore loser Mosimane deflected the blame instead of purely admitting defeat and his team's lack of respect for the opponents and the beautiful game cost them greatly. Downs were outplayed in every department, outmuscled by a smaller passionate Students, outsmarted by the Wits intellectuals, outskilled, didn't meet entrance requirements for the finals and de-enrolled in MTN8." – Boetie M.
