Chippa United coach Tebogo Moloi received the award for the PSL's Coach of the Month earlier this week.
Moloi was rewarded for the impressive start he has made with the club since taking over from caretaker coach Mbuyiselo Sambu. In his "thank you" speech, "Tebza" expressed his gratitude to the club's chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi, for entrusting him with leading the Port Elizabeth team, comparing the Eastern Cape-born man to yesteryear's Orlando Pirates chairmen.
One Supporters Club member, username Mentashe, real name Bongani Mentashe, commended the Soweto-born coach and shared the same sentiment of Mpengesi being compared to Bucs' yesteryear chairmen. Soccer Laduma followed up with Bongani to get more insight into his comment regarding Moloi's statement. He had a chat with Lerato Mkhondo; here is how their conversation unpacked.
Lerato: Hi Bongs, thank you for your time. Briefly tell us more about yourself.
Bongani: Hi Lerato, I'm a Cape Town-born football supporter. I was still in Joburg when I joined Supporters Club a couple of years ago. I'm a huge fan of Kaizer Chiefs and an overall football follower.
Lerato: As a member, how often do you visit the Soccer Laduma website?
Bongani: Hahaha, look, at every chance I get. I'm always on the website for fresh and interesting football news and, of course, debate with fellow members. I absolutely love the SL website.
Lerato: Great! Now on your comment regarding Tebogo Moloi's coaching stay at Chippa, you said you doubted him. Please elaborate?
Bongani: Considering the fact that he was an assistant at Pirates and with coaches having come and gone, yet he still remained in the same position, I really had doubts about him. He was never given enough chances at Mayfair.
Lerato: Yes…
Bongani: I never thought he would take on so much responsibility, and he did. I never thought he had the skill to lead a team like Chippa. You can tell with most players' body language when they take to the field that Tebza has a really positive influence on them. It's quite clear that there isn't much involvement from the management, he's given the freedom that he needs to truly prove himself.
Lerato: Your thoughts on him comparing Mpengesi to former Bucs chairmen?
Bongani: Take away the fact that Bucs are a big club, the chairman (Irvin Khoza) plays fair. Not only does he give one a chance to be a player, he also gives you an opportunity to work within the club, depending on their capabilities. When something is not right, he calls players to his office for proper guidance. Same thing with Mpengesi, even though on his part, he is not a very patient man, but the comparison is not far-fetched, honestly.
Lerato: Great insight… Thanks Bongani… talk soon!
