Barker: We Were Better Than Chiefs After Red Card

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker felt his side were better than Kaizer Chiefs after the early red card on Sunday evening.

The Cape Winelands side lost the services of Siviwe Nkwali on 12 minutes after being shown a straight red card.

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo scored directly after the free-kick before Glody Lilepo sealed the win for Chiefs in second-half stoppage time.

“We spoke to the players and said red-cards and penalties also can make it difficult for you. So, red-cards and penalties are somethings we don’t want to give away and unfortunately, we did both tonight,” Barker told SuperSport after the game.

“Look, after the red-card I thought our response was very good. I thought the remainder of the first half we were the better team.

“Obviously, a bit unlucky with the crossbar, some good saves, hit the post and that was our moment to get something back and then maybe second half could’ve been a little bit more different.

“But I think you could see second half they controlled the game a lot better, we just didn’t have the numbers or legs to continue the pressure we applied in the last 30 minutes of the first half.

“So, I was hoping to hang in there, hang in there and maybe we get a half chance, maybe in a set-piece, maybe salvage something from the game. But in doing that it obviously opened up a lot of opportunities for them which I think showed with the second goal and penalty.

“We were just a little bit overrun with the numbers so you know ten minutes, red-card it does make the evening very tough for you,” he added.
