Pirates, meanwhile, were forced into one change as Thapelo Xoki came in for the suspended Nkosinathi Sibisi while Patrick Maswanganyi was left out of the match day squad.

There was a 30 minute delay to the encounter as a number of supporters were still making their way into the stadium.

When the game did get underway at 15h30, Chiefs got off to the perfect start when Dillan Solomons won the ball high up before surging into the box and teeing up Makabi Lilepo, who sent a first-time finish into the far corner for his first derby goal.

The Buccaneers overcame their slow start and levelled matters in the 23rd minute when Mohau Nkota threaded a well-weighted pass for Evidence Makgopa, who needed no second invitation to slot past the on-rushing Bruce Bvuma to take his tally to five league goals.

Pirates looked a lot better after grabbing the equaliser but they were unable to take lead in the final 15 minutes after Xoki saw his powerful header brilliantly tipped over the crossbar by Bvuma.

Pirates came out firing in the second half and dominated possession and they should have taken the lead six minutes when Relebohile Mofokeng did well to set up Kabelo Dlamini, who sent his effort just over the crossbar.

The Buccaneers got their reward in the 68th minute as Hotto did well to hold the ball up in the box before laying it off for Mofokeng, who unleashed a strike that sailed through Bvuma for his fifth league goal of the campaign.

Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi responded with a double change for the final 13 minutes as Thabo Cele and Tashreeq Morris replaced Ngcobo and Pule Mmodi as they went in search of the equaliser.

There would be no comeback for the Amakhosi, who also finished the game with ten players after Bradley Cross was given his marching orders after picking up his second yellow card of the clash.
