Folz On Radar Of African Giants

News reaching the Siya crew is that former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz has landed on the radar of an African club. 

Insiders have revealed that Folz is understaood to have made the shortlist for the head coach role at Young Africans. 

"The deal for coach Romain Folz joining Yanga is close. There is discussions about two seasons with another year option. There were other coaches that the club was looking at, but the club is interested in Coach Folz," the insider revealed to Siya crew.

According to reports, the reigning Tanzanian Premier League champions have also set their sights on Rulani Mokwena, with ASEC Mimosas boss Julien Chevalier also understood to have made the shortlist. 

"The club believes that (Folz) can step up Yanga in the Champions League next season. They believe they can go far in the Champions League with the players they have and having Romain Folz as the coach," the source added.

Folz has steadily built a profile across the continent. After coaching Township Rollers in Botswana, he moved to South Africa in 2022 to join Marumo Gallants, becoming the youngest manager in the DStv Premiership at the time. He later had a stint at AmaZulu FC before being reassigned as the club’s technical director in 2023.

In the 2024/25 season, he joined Mamelodi Sundowns as assistant coach but was released alongside head coach Manqoba Mngqithi a few months into the campaign.

Soccer Laduma reached out to Yanga SC for comment, but attempts were unsuccessful.
