According to well-placed sources, including football intermediary Gerald Baloyi, Upington City are “almost done” finalising the deal to bring Mongoya on board ahead of the 2025/26 Motsepe Foundation Championship season.
“Upington City are leading the race for Abraham Mongoya. The deal is almost done,” Baloyi confirmed.
Mongoya has earned widespread praise for his impressive work at Kruger United, where he initially joined as an assistant coach before being handed full control following the departure of head coach Vusi Mkhatshwa.
Under Mongoya’s guidance, Kruger quickly transformed into one of the most in-form sides in the division.
His tenure included a strong run of form that saw Kruger briefly enter the title race alongside eventual winners Durban City FC, and they came within touching distance of clinching a playoff spot.

Though the club ultimately fell short, Mongoya’s tactical acumen and leadership drew attention from across the league.
The growing interest in his services led both Upington City and Venda Football Club to express formal interest, but insiders suggest Upington are now firmly in pole position.
