The Siya crew has established that SuperSport United were monitoring the situation with Brandon Petersen closely prior to Kaizer Chiefs offering him a new two-year contract this month.
Matsatsantsa are actively looking for an experienced goal minder to take over from Ricardo Goss when his loan move from Mamelodi Sundowns expires at the end of the season – he is expected to go back to Chloorkop.
Petersen would have been the ideal replacement, according to SuperSport insiders, at no cost at all on a free transfer had Amakhosi delayed handing him fresh terms as soon as he was eligible to talk to other clubs.
As things stand, the side coached by Gavin Hunt has registered Goss, Washington Arubi and young Samukelo Xulu. The club brought back 38-year-old Arubi to give Goss competition at the start of the season, but his age means it's not possible for the Zimbabwean international to be the club's long-term solution.
At some point, it appeared as though SuperSport would have had a shot at landing Petersen, who was dropped from being Chiefs' first choice late last year soon after Cavin Johnson took over.
This was due to countless costly errors that put Amakhosi in losing positions during matches, forcing Johnson to consider Bruce Bvuma.
Although Soccer Laduma has previously reported that Petersen continued to enjoy support from the Soweto giants' hierarchy, it's thought Matsatsantsa were still hopeful of the situation turning in their favour. Now that it hasn't, their search continues.
