Marou Or Erasmus: Last Chance To Impress Pirates?

With Orlando Pirates releasing Bienvenu Eva Nga, the Siya crew takes a look at how the club has given Souaibou Marou a chance to get back into the team.

The January Transfer Window closed last Friday, and Pirates had released Eva Nga but kept their Cameroonian player even though the latter was also not playing enough games.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, Marou was one of the players who could have left the club in January.

Siya sources close to the club have indicated that Pirates' technical team and management may have decided to give Marou an opportunity to prove himself and that he may have until the end of the season to impress.

"It's clear he has been told to prove himself in the next six months until the end of the season. It's true he was one of the players or strikers who was supposed to leave but after serious considerations from both the technical team and management they have agreed that he deserves another chance to prove himself and this is his chance to stand up and be counted," the source told Soccer Laduma.

A second Siya source discussed how this would impact the future of both Marou and forward player Kermit Erasmus.

"It's still a tricky situation for Marou as his future also depends on Erasmus. You know Erasmus' contract expires in June this year while that one for Marou runs until June 2025 so it will depend on who impressed more to stay," said the second Siya source.

"But for now he has been given the chance to prove himself if the team still needs him," the source observed.

Marou was at the Qatar Fifa World Cup with Cameroon in December 2022 and then joined Pirates in January but he had only played a few games in his first six months. This season he is yet to feature in the PSL, having played twice in the CAF Champions League, with his last game being on the 17th of September, in the defeat against Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana.

Soccer Laduma contacted Pirates for comment but no response was received while preparing this story.
