Former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz returned to the dugout in a dramatic behind-the-scenes stint in North Africa, and source close to the tactician have broken silence on his latest achievement.
The Frenchman, who parted ways with Sundowns late last year, recently wrapped up a secret mission that saw him save Algerian side Olympique Akbou from relegation – a story that sounds more like a Netflix script than a traditional coaching gig.

Folz, 34, has developed a reputation for taking on unconventional challenges across the African continent, with previous stops in Ghana, Uganda, Guinea, and Botswana, among other countries.
But his latest adventure has raised eyebrows in football circles – not only for the achievement but also for the secrecy around it.
“Romain has been in Algeria since March, working quietly behind the scenes. He was in charge for nine games – four wins, three draws, and just two losses. His impact was immediate, and ultimately, he saved the club’s topflight status. It was a job well done under very unique circumstances,” said a source close to the coach.
According to reports from Afrik-Foot, Folz took charge of Akbou in complete anonymity, never sitting on the bench during matches.
Bound by a confidentiality agreement, the French tactician operated anonymously, coordinating training sessions, delivering tactical instructions, and even handling half-time team talks – all while watching matches from the stands, hidden from public view.
Despite the covert nature of his involvement, the results spoke volumes: three wins, six draws, and just two defeats – enough to help the club mathematically survive relegation with two games to spare.

A source close to the coach confirmed to the Siya crew that Folz is now available and would consider the right opportunity in the Betway Premiership.
With Durban City, Polokwane City, and SuperSport United among the clubs expected to make technical team changes ahead of the 2025/26 season, Folz could be considered by decision-makers looking to add a fresh dimension to their benches, according to sources.
