A Siya source with close ties to Zamalek’s internal affairs spoke to Soccer Laduma and indicated that while there is awareness of the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach being on the radar, the Cairo-based outfit has yet to make a decision.
Soccer Laduma has been informed as to why there is a delay to bring in a Zamalek coach.
“We heard in the last couple of days that agents of Pitso Mosimane have suggested his name for Zamalek, but there has been no response from the club yet in terms of making a decision,” the Cairo-based source explained.
Despite lifting the Egypt Cup recently, Zamalek’s camp has been dealing with a series of distractions. The most damaging, according to insiders, has been the departure of club talisman Ahmed Sayed “Zizo,” who completed a sensational and controversial switch to bitter rivals Al Ahly.
The transfer has not only stung Zamalek fans but also forced the club to reconsider its plans for next season.
The source added that Zamalek's managerial approach remains unconventional when compared to most clubs around the world:
“Zamalek usually prefer a European coach, so we have to see if they make an exception. Right now, they have many issues to resolve. Yes, they are in a euphoria for winning the cup, but the loss of their star player Zizo to rivals Al Ahly is having a major impact on the club.
"The way Zamalek operate is they first sign players and then they look for a coach who can work with those players. This is the other way around when compared to what other clubs usually do.”
With Zamalek still scrambling to plug the gap left by Zizo and to bolster their squad, a decision on Mosimane may only come later in the off-season. It remains to be seen whether the club hierarchy will break from their traditional preference for European tacticians and turn to the experienced South African, who knows Egyptian football inside out and boasts an impressive resume across the continent.
