Sundowns Turn To Mayo After Missing Out On Tau?

Sundowns Turn To Mayo After Missing Out On Tau?

Mamelodi Sundowns have given the impression that they would like to sign one more striker before the transfer window closes and Siya sources have now indicated they might have reignited their interest in last season's joint top goalscorer.

Cape Town City's Khanyisa Mayo was linked to both Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns for this season, and the Western Cape club has played hard ball with regards to how much money they want for the player, effectively meaning that it was thought only a foreign club could afford the striker.

Siya sources have now added that Mayo may be the preferred option to replace Ethiopian forward Abubeker Nasir whose injury problems are holding him back going into this season. The Brazilians will play in six different competitions in this season and are looking to have a big squad to cope with the extra fixtures.

The source also mentioned that the situation may have changed because Sundowns are unable to bring in former player Percy Tau. Due to the Bafana Bafana forward's contract with Al Ahly, it seems as if Tau may only be able to move to Europe, if he is to leave Egypt as reported by the Siya crew.

The Brazilians are competing in the DStv Premiership, the MTN8, The Carling Cup and the Nedbank Cup on the local front. Then they have the CAF Champions League and the African Super League to add to that as well.

24-year-old Mayo had scored 12 league goals last season for Cape Town City and would provide excellent support for the likes of Peter Shalulile upfront for Downs.

The source has told the Siya crew that the Brazilians are aware of the R36m price tag placed on the player's head by Cape Town City, and they could be working on solutions to make an agreement.

"The main reason why they are hoping to land Mayo is the injury problem with one of the strikers in Nasir," said the Siya source.

"He is struggling with injury and they feel even if he recovers they are not sure how long he can remain fit to help the team. They are looking at how many competitions they are involved in and they need as many fit players as they can have and they have been talking about Khanyisa (Mayo) again," the source told the Siya crew.

Another source stated that Sundowns are still looking at a reasonable price from City, for an amount which makes business sense.

"You see City wanted (Thabiso) Kutumela and they gave them the player without a hustle. You never know the logic behind it," said the Siya source.

"Now they want to negotiate with them about the possibility of Mayo coming the other side. Obviously it won't be easy because he is City's main striker and a dependable player as well.

"But money talks. I am not sure how far this is but they have reignited their interest in the striker. That one we all know now. Let's just wait and see what happens next," the source told the Siya crew.
