Durban City Set To Sign Ghana International

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 18: Durban City celebrate winning the league during the Motsepe Foundation Championship match between Cape Town Spurs and Durban City

Newly-promoted Betway Premiership side Durban City FC have begun their recruitment drive, targeting experienced players to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.

Soccer Laduma has learnt through sources close to the club that the KwaZulu-Natal outfit is set to secure the signature of Ghana international goalkeeper Fredrick Asare from Asante Kotoko as their first major acquisition of the transfer window.

"The deal is as good as done. All arrangements for Asare to travel to Durban in South Africa is finalised. They are looking at having more experience in the goalkeeping department and that's why they have gone for Asare. He is good and he brings good competition amongst the goalkeepers," the insider told Soccer Laduma.

The 26-year-old shot-stopper is a former Ghana U20 international who has established himself as a regular starter for Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko over the past two seasons, expected to bring valuable experience to the newly-promoted Durban side.

Meanwhile, a second insider stated that City will commence their pre-season preparations next week, with player assessments set to begin.

"From Monday next week they will have a new coach and that's when they are expected to start assessing new players as well. But with the Ghanaian goalkeeper everything is apparently already done," the second source told the Siya crew.

Soccer Laduma was the first to report how Gavin Hunt is linked to coach Durban City.

When approached for comment, Durban City chairman Farouk Kadodia gave a guarded response that hinted at the imminent arrival of Asare.

"Yes, Asare is coming here but we can't talk about signings right now. When the time is right you will know," Kadodia told Soccer Laduma.

The expected acquisition of Asare signals Durban City's intent to establish a strong foundation as they prepare for life in South Africa's top flight. With pre-season training commencing next week, fans can expect further additions as the club aims to build a competitive squad capable of maintaining their Premiership status.
