South African defender Siyabonga Ngezana was the centre of controversy this past weekend after he escaped punishment for a reckless challenge.

Ngezana started FCSB's 2-0 loss over FC Arges in the latest round of action in Romania's Liga 1. The 28-year-old was withdrawn at half-time, but he was lucky he wasn't sent for an early bath much sooner.
According to Romanian publication GSP, Ngezana avoided a red card after he caught FC Arges player Mario Tudose with a shin to the face after a wild scissors kick attempt.
Ngezana received a yellow card for his wild behaviour on the pitch, with the VAR officials not deeming the challenge worthy of a red card. Tudose was left in a heap after the challenge and appeared dazed afterwards, as he was removed in the 38th minute.
Speaking after the game, Tudose revealed he recovered well but had felt dizzy after the challenge. He also knew the ex-Chiefs defender's challenge was not intentional, according to AS.
"I don't know what the rules are, but he hit me hard! The referee told me it wasn't intentional, that [Ngezana] was looking for the ball, but he did a 'scissors' right into my head," Tudose said.
According to Golazo, two referee observers revealed that a yellow card was the right decision, despite the reckless nature of the action.
"It's not red, it's just a yellow card," one official said.
"If a player has his back to the opponent, jumps with his foot up and hits him while also playing the ball, a yellow card is given," he added.
The other official was in agreement that the right call was made against the Bafana defender.

"No more than a yellow card was required. The attacking player does not see the opponent and plays the ball, after which the respective contact occurs. The referee's decision was the one that complied with UEFA's instructions," he said.
