Following Benni McCarthy’s early success with Kenya at the African Nations Championship (CHAN), the South African head coach has even earned plaudits from rival tacticians.

The Capetonian was appointed as Harambee Stars head coach in March 2025. The x-year-old did not have an easy start to life in the role, going winless in his first two matches in charge — a 3-3 draw against Gambia and a 2-1 defeat to Gabon in FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
However, the ongoing CHAN has provided an opportunity for the former Manchester United assistant coach and his new side to redeem themselves — and redeem themselves they have. Kenya are currently unbeaten in the competition, having secured victories against former champions Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco, with a quarter-final clash now on the horizon.
McCarthy has been showered with praise for what he has achieved in the early stages of the tournament, even from rival tacticians.
Tanzania Football Federation Technical Director, Oscar Rabson Mirambo, is the latest to commend the ex-striker. Despite the Taifa Stars’ own success at CHAN, it has not stopped Mirambo from labelling the Bafana Bafana legend as one of the most impressive coaches at the continental spectacle.

“Coming out on top of that group is not a walk in the park. In terms of attacking, Harambee Stars are playing good football, and defensively, you can see the low block being used effectively. Playing with 10 men is never easy, but it takes players with heart and a flexible coach. I applaud him for how he manages games and adapts to situations,” Mirambo told The Eastleigh Voice.
