Former Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar has commented on recent reports that he has taken up a head coaching position at Ajax Amsterdam.
Since hanging up his boots three years ago, the former Everton, Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland midfielder has been hard at work to obtain his coaching badges.
As such, Pienaar took up a job at his former club Ajax Amsterdam first as a trainee coach, before he was promoted to assistant coach of the club's under 18s where he worked under Dutch coach Dave Vos in the club's youth academy.
Following Vos's departure to Rangers, reports in local media suggested that Pienaar had since been promoted to the head coach position after pictures surfaced of the Westbury-born star on the touchline for the Dutch giants.
However, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, Pienaar provided clarity on the vacant coaching role.
"We shouldn't get ahead ourselves. I am not the head coach. I have been taking a few of the training sessions since the coach's departure – but nothing has been made official yet," Pienaar told the crew from his Amsterdam base.
Asked about the match in which he was seen coaching, Pienaar revealed that the 3-0 win over AZ Alkmaar was in fact a friendly match.
"It was a friendly match but obviously it was good for the lads to get a win," Pienaar explained.
The former Bafana Bafana skipper is currently working towards completing his UEFA Pro License, which has been stalled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
