Orlando Pirates defender Innocent Maela is understood to be on the verge of closing the chapter on his playing career – but may be opening a new one within the Buccaneers’ ranks.
The 32-year-old featured in only 12 matches across all competitions this season, with just two starts in the Betway Premiership.

One of those came in Pirates’ final match of the season against Magesi FC last night, which sources have indicated could be his last appearance on the pitch in the black and white jersey.
Maela’s current contract is due to expire at the end of June and, according to insider information, it will not be renewed.
However, the veteran left-back may not be parting ways with the Soweto giants just yet.
“Inno is a Buccaneer through and through, and don’t be surprised if he remains with the club beyond his career,” a source close to the situation told the Siya crew.
“Remember that Pirates is where he started – in the club’s Youth Development. Over the years, he has served the club with professionalism and commitment, and that isn’t being taken lightly. He’s been offered a role in a different capacity within the club. While final decisions are to be made, he’s likely to take the offer,” the source said.
Should Maela accept the offer, it would mark a continuation of a long-standing tradition at Ezimnyama of keeping key figures within the club's structure post-retirement.
In 2022, the club made a similar gesture toward then-captain Happy Jele, who was offered a non-playing role after the expiration of his contract.
Jele ultimately opted to continue playing elsewhere, but the gesture reflected Pirates’ commitment to honouring loyalty and leadership.
Maela’s journey, which began in the club’s youth system before blossoming into a first-team career that included stints as club captain, has been defined by consistency, discipline, and a quiet leadership style.

His potential transition into a technical, ambassadorial, or developmental role is seen by many within the club as a natural evolution.
Pirates have since confirmed the departures of Miguel Timm and Maela, paying tribute to the players on X.
"Thank you Miguel Timm for every tackle, every pass and every battle fought. Wishing you all the best," the club wrote on social media.
