According to a report by Israeli publication Sport5, Maccabi Haifa have entered into talks for the 20-year-old winger, who has emerged as one of the hottest properties in South African football. The Israeli giants have reportedly been monitoring Mofokeng for several months and are now ready to make their move.
However, Sport5 believes the Buccaneers have responded with the following asking price.
“Orlando Pirates [are] demanding about 1.5 million euros (approx. R31.2 million) for the 20-year-old talent, as well as a percentage of any future sale.”
This is arguably a low amount considering Mofokeng is a generational talent in South Africa with rare achievements for a player at his age.
Sport5 also noted that Maccabi Haifa are not alone in the chase, with reports suggesting that rivals Maccabi Tel Aviv have also been keeping tabs on the Soweto sensation.
Despite being just 20, Mofokeng has become a regular fixture in the Pirates first team and a fan favourite with his fearless displays and creativity on the flank.
Maccabi Haifa currently boast a host of attacking options on the left wing, including Matias Nahuel, Dolev Haziza, and Iyad Khalaili. However, with several foreigners expected to depart, room may open up for Mofokeng should a deal be struck.
With Pirates reportedly keen on retaining a future financial interest in the player, any potential suitor will have to dig deeper to prize Mofokeng away from Mayfair.
Soccer Laduma contacted Orlando Pirates for a comment on the price tag, and the club has not responded yet.
