Riveiro: I Haven't Done Anything Exceptional At Pirates

Despite reaching two cup finals and a CAF Champions League spot well in reach, Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro says he hasn't done anything exceptional at the Buccaneers.

The Spanish coach faced his fair share of scepticism when he was appointed as the head coach of one of the country's biggest clubs last year, despite being a relative unknown in the local space - a gamble by Pirates, one that has backfired before.

However, Riveiro ignored the noise and got to work, and he looked to implement his philosophy and playing style on his team.

There was a quick turnover in results for the 47-year-old, who managed to lift the MTN8 title in his first few months in charge of Pirates.

His team lost their grip on champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the Premiership title race, but mounted a stunning comeback and currently find themselves in second place on the log with two matches to go.

Now, Riveiro and his Pirates side find themselves in another cup final having beaten rivals, Kaizer Chiefs, in the Nedbank Cup. The club will be taking on Sekhukhune United at the Loftus Versveld Stadium.

Speaking to the media after the game, the Spaniard has played down his success in his maiden season in South Africa.

"I'm very positive even though I don't look like it sometimes. I always think that everything is gonna be alright. In sports, you have to go with that mentality wherever you are. You must make sure that you can convince the people around you that everything is possible, otherwise what kind of leader am I?," he told journalists, after his side's win over Chiefs.

"And then I am coaching Orlando Pirates, with all the respect for everyone else. So, it's possible because I have fantastic material and a lot of quality and that's why I cannot make miracles. It's not about me, it's about the whole group. I'm happy but I'll be much happier in three weeks if we manage to win the cup.

"It's nice to be in the finals and I think that Pirates should regularly be in every final, so I'm not doing anything exceptional and now we have to go to the final with all of our capacity and concentration and do everything in order to get it done."
